Do I need a library card?

You may browse the library, read newspapers and magazines, use the computers or the wireless internet access without a library card; however, you MUST have a library card to check out any library materials.

With a library card, you also gain access to all the library’s electronic services.

How do I get a library card?

Library cards are free, just ask for an application at the front desk.

You MUST PRESENT:

  1. Photo ID AND proof of current address
  2. Two references not at the same address as you. One may be an employer 

Parents must apply on behalf of their children under the age of 18 years. 

How long does it take to sign up for a library card?

It only takes a few minutes to sign up at the library.

Does checking out a book cost anything?

Elk City Carnegie Library cards are free for residents of our trade area, and items checked out and returned on time are free of charge. Our paperback exchange operates on a one-for-one trade. Items requested through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)—which allows you to borrow books from other libraries—require a $3 mailing fee to help cover postage costs.

What if I lose my library card?

Be sure to notify the library if your card is lost or stolen to limit your liability against unauthorized use. A replacement card costs $3.00.

How long can I keep the items I check out?

Loan period: All circulating library materials may be checked out for 2 weeks.

Fines:

  • Books, audiobooks, and magazines: $0.10 per day
  • Videos: $0.50 per day
  • Mobile hotspots: $0.50 per day

The library charges for ALL pages printed.

Can I renew the checked out items?

Yes, unless another customer has requested the item or if the item is 30 days overdue.

Can I renew online or by phone?

You may renew items by logging into your library account, by emailing library@elkcity.com, or by calling the library at (580) 225-0136. Items can be renewed as long as they are not more than 30 days overdue and do not have a hold on them.

I lost/damaged an item. What do I do?

If an item can no longer be circulated due to loss or damage, you will be charged a replacement cost of the item. You will not be held responsible for normal wear and tear.

Does the library offer free Internet?

The library has 8 public computers in the Main Library and 4 public computers in the Children’s Library, along with 4 AWE Learning computers for children ages 2–10. All computers will be shut down 10 minutes before closing. Patrons must follow the library’s Computer & Internet Use Policy. There is no cost to use the computers, and a library card is not required.

The library also offers wireless internet access for personal devices. The open network does not require a password and is available daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. both inside the library and on the library grounds.

Can I print or copy materials?

Yes, printing and copying are available for a fee. Each printed page counts individually, so printing on both sides of a sheet will be charged as two pages.

Fee Schedule:

  • Black & white copies: $0.25 per page
  • Color copies: $0.50 per page
