Safety Department

Elk City Safety Department

The City is committed to protecting the health and safety of all individuals affected by our business activities, including our workforce and the public and, their property.

We will also safeguard the environment and operate in a manner consistent with recognized standards regarding the environment, health, and safety.

PEOSH

The Public Employees Occupational Safety & Health Division of the Oklahoma Department of Labor is responsible for the enforcement of workplace safety and health regulations in the public sector, including: city, county, state, public schools and universities, as well as public trusts. These employers do not fall under the jurisdiction of Federal OSHA.

However, The Oklahoma Occupational Health & Safety Act adopts most of the Federal OSHA (29 CFR 1904, 1910, and 1926) standards, with a few minor exceptions.

OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created OSHA with the mission to save lives, prevent injuries, and protect the health of America’s workers.

The OSH Act specifically requires that each employer furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees, and shall comply with the regulations established by OSHA. It also requires that each employee comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued by OSHA, which are applicable to his own actions and conduct.

Our safety program is aligned with OSHA standards.

Integrating Safety

Although we comply with OSHA standards, we also recognize that by simply “complying” it doesn’t mean that it is the safest way to get a job done. Just because you are compliant doesn’t mean you are being safe. However, if you do your job the safest way possible, you will always be compliant.

That means employers and employees must work together for a safer workplace. At the City of Elk City safe work practices are a condition of employment. It’s not just about getting a job done, it’s about getting a job done and doing it safely. Safety must be integrated into every process.
