The Elk City Fire Department promotes National Fire Prevention Week every year during the week of October 9th. They contact area schools (PreK through 6th grade), day cares and preschools to schedule fire safety programs for the children.
Every year the program theme changes so that Sparky and his friends can teach the children something new and interesting.
After the presentation, the children move outside to the Smoke House. The House is filled with smoke and used to educate the children and give them practice on what to do and how to get out of a burning structure.

The department takes out some of their vehicles, including the ladder truck, to show how they work. Sponsors of the program furnish fire hats for each child and information is handed out concerning fire drills at home and fire prevention and safety.
