The Emergency Medical Services duties were added to the Elk City Fire Department on October 1, 2003.
The ECFD is licensed as a basic level service and is staffed with 4 full-time and 3 part-time paramedics to provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients. We provide paramedic coverage through "individual protocols" provided by the medical director and approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. These paramedics are trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support. Our staff includes 4 First Responders, 18 Basic EMTs, 8 Intermediate EMTs, 7 Paramedics and 1 Medical Director. All staff members are cross-trained in fire fighting, rescue and emergency medical services technical skills. All ECFD Basic EMTs carry the certification of Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support.
The ECFD EMS has 4 ambulances ready 24 hours a day to provide emergency care to ill or injured patients. Each ambulance is staffed with at least 2 EMTs, more if needed. Each ambulance is equipped with cardiac monitors, cardiac medications, advanced airway equipment, and I.V. therapy equipment to provide life saving intervention.
The ECFD EMS provides pre-hospital emergency medical service to the City of Elk City and surrounding communities. We have mutual aid agreements with our neighboring communities to assist in paramedic intercepts if needed. Additionally, the EMS performs inter-facility transports, providing emergency care and transport from rural hospitals to higher level care facilities. On average the EMS responds to approximately 1800 calls per year.
The ECFD is proud to provide this needed service to the City of Elk City and surrounding communities. If you have any questions about the Fire/Rescue/EMS services, please feel free to call or stop by the department and we will gladly answer them for you.
